Holiday Travel With Baby
Traveling with your baby during the holidays can be hectic and nerve-racking. Many first-time parents discover that staying on schedule is now impossible, and that forgetting that all-important toy or baby supply can cause havoc in an otherwise uneventful trip. Here are a few suggestions on how to make your holiday travel with the little one(s) as carefree as possible.
Slow and Flow. This seems like a forgone conclusion, but it needs to be said: slow down. Allow more time for packing, travel en route and unpacking. Allow more time for meals, bedtimes and wake-up time. Allow more time for everything. A child in an unfamiliar environment will often react differently and not be as ready to go to people and places he or she does not know as well. And then there's the extra stuff you've got to carry with you-from diaper bags to toys to the kids' clothing and suitcases. Remember, it's not like traveling with other adults any more. If you get in a hurry, you're sunk.
Anticipate the Meltdown. Face it, a child meltdown is going to occur. The stress of travel, of the unfamiliar, of not having all the usual stuff in the usual places-this is going to impact your children. Nobody likes a meltdown in the back seat of the car, or on the airplane or in the airport. The best defense? Spend time talking to your children and giving them attention during travel. Often parents get in "their own world" on the road or in the air. Let travel time have an extra measure of undivided attention and you'll be amazed at the result.
Baby First. Finally, when traveling with the baby, remember to put the baby first. Don't let your tunnel-vision thinking of "getting there as soon as possible" keep you from stopping at the rest stop for a few minutes of attention to the baby, or browsing through the gift shop for a fun new toy. Your baby is already dealing with an unfamiliar environment. Letting them see through your actions that they are being cared for and important to you and it will ease their unrest in what could look to them like a scary new place.
